Course: Digital Imaging ARTC2210
During the semester, students used the computer as an art tool. The emphasis on instruction was on the art and the tools were secondary.
Students explored 2D paint, image manipulation, and create art using vectors and raster images using various peripherals such as scanners, graphic tablets, digital cameras, and image capture techniques. Each final project included an image and professional printing techniques.
The course emphasized creative experimentation informed by contemporary research issues and critical theory. During the semester, students investigated the impact of contemporary digital technology on imagination, narration, mythology, and artistic expression.
This group of projects come from an introductory course, comprised of freshman and sophomore level students.
The student was asked to create a self-portrait using photo montage and collage. The assignment was to demonstrate their ability to creatively express facets of themselves in a compelling visual form. They were asked to use this project as a visual poem of their personality or life. Students researched contemporary practitioners who work with self-identity.
Synesthesia is a human mental condition that effects only a certain number of people, called Synesthetes. These people associate color to letters and numbers automatically through cognitive means. In art, variances of music also play a role of color association.
Students were asked to use mind and senses to construct abstract representations to describe the sensations selected in class: Night Sensations, Hospital Smells or Beach Sounds. Students were instructed to visualize ways in which the representations interact compositionally within the picture plane, which should be consistent with how the sensations might actually be experienced in the real world. They used texture, shape, and color to better describe their understanding of the chosen sensations.
"I see this piece as a representation of the many sensations felt during a night in the big city. Bright lights and a vibrant assortment of colors characterize large cities at night. Although mostly central there is a strong sense of balance and movement in this piece. The movement is representative of the sound of a city. The collaboration of sounds make an ecletic sort of crchestra that I feel is exemplified well in this piece."
For this project I wanted to show the creation of angels, humans, and demons by some divine creator.
The movement in each image is unique, the creation of angels are more dramatic where one angel reaches for his creator; the creation of humans is more static, some hands are reaching to the creator for light and nutrients and others are reaching for the imperfections; lastly, the demons pull the humans down to the creator of hell and pull other demons back up from the creator. Together these images represent creation of the good, the evil, and the manipulated.

This image series was produced to express a specific contrasting narrative following a specific theme selected by the student. The student was to use imagery developed by using alternative sources and modular composition.

"This piece originated from a blurry photo that I took while returning to my apartment one late evening. I completely repainted the landscape and drew out many of the colors and also made more evident some of the less obvious figures and silhouettes with a standard brush and basic blending. As a final touch, I added some tree-like forms to the negative space in the sky. I wanted it to be surreal and dreamlike, yet eerie and morose. My associations with nighttime are not particularly pleasant due to my overall resentment towards the obscurity of the night and silence, so I figured I would try to depict this as a person who could 'see' those qualities as best I could."

As a triptych, this piece depicts the inner balance between what we humanly perceive to be right and wrong. In the center is the balance between the two sides in somewhat of a yin-yang interpretation. The ghostly infants in the center are the combination of the two sides and the figures on either side are the guardians of both right and wrong. The left image displays the growth of “good” actions and the helpful nature we all hold within. The right image then shows the destructive tendencies that invade our minds. Relying on heavy use of darkness mixed with vibrant blues and red, I wanted to create a piece that is bold, disturbing, and yet functional as a decorative and meaningful piece.
