Project Description:
Course: Introduction to New Media GRA121, New Media Seminar GRA220, & Art as System ART203
As discussed in class, there are many methods for re-contextualizing elements of new media. From Lev Manovich, we learn that variability and modularity are principle components of new media. We applied these principles of new media in the form of mashups, remixes and repurposing.
As seen in these project examples, students have been able to recontextualize different components by first analyzing the purported purpose of a system and then expressly breaking the system, often merging it with a second system. While the deconstructivist approach offers insights to the student in how the media affects the cultural layer, the reconstruction component of these projects provides the student with challenges to synthesize their understanding of the tools and materials covered in class.
Most of the following links will lead to individual portals created by the student.

Trackball Deoderant
As part of the Art as System course, upperclassmen in Digital Arts were assigned to document the deconstruction of a system. After this, the students were instructed to combine their deconstructed system with another system, creating an interesting chimera. Documentation was to be directed by the student in the form of a web presence.
Steven Piozet disassembled a trackball from an older upright console game and reconstructed the piece with a functional deodorant applicator.

Documentation was to be directed by the student in the form of a web presence.
Michael Dries-Coons disassembled a children's musical keyboard, connecting its components to a television CRT tube making a musical oscilloscope.

Dance Dance Revolution Gameboy

Jason Cayabyab disassembled a DDR gamepad and rerouted the touch sensitive pads to control a Nintendo Gameboy, using it to play a simple game of Pacman. Later, along with a team of other artists, Jason helped create the DDR Mortal Kombat tournament featured in the ZER01 New Media Festival 2010.

Driver's Ed with Waldo Salazar
As part of a series of projects on Machinima, this student repurposed gameplay from a racing video game as instructional material for a driver's ed instructional video. The content was written and directed by the student, a second year with no Machinima experience.
Wikipedia Narrative
In an Introduction to New Media course, beginning students were asked to select a social media platform and subvert that platform in some way. This student determined that Wikipedia functions as an information site and chose to alter Wikipedia to create a narrative story through multiple entries.
